  1. a town in western Scotland, near Glasgow, with a long tradition of producing clothes and fabrics in wool and cotton. It became well known in the 19th century when the paisley pattern was introduced. It is a design like a feather or teardrop (= a single tear) with a curved end which originally came from India and became popular around the world after it was used for cloth and shawls made in Paisley.
