  1. the fifth largest city in the US and the largest in Pennsylvania. It is a major port on the Delaware River and was established by William Penn. Philadelphia is one of America's most historic cities. It is the place where the Declaration of Independence was signed and the American Constitution was written. Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are also there.
  2. the first major US film (1993) about the disease AIDS. Tom Hanks won an Oscar as Best Actor, and Bruce Springsteen received one for his song Streets of Philadelphia. In the film Hanks plays a homosexual man with AIDS who is dismissed from work and begins a legal case against his employer. The film created a lot of debate in America about equal rights for people with AIDS.
