  1. a British pirate radio station (= an illegal station), started in 1964, which broadcast pop music from a ship at sea. It was extremely successful and led to the forming of Britain's first official pop music station, Radio 1, in 1967. Radio Caroline continued broadcasting from a ship until 1990.
