- the name of the German shepherd dog that was the popular animal star in many US silent adventure films of the 1920s. His popular name was 'Rinty'. The first Rin Tin Tin was found on the field of battle during the First World War by US Captain Lee Duncan, who made more than $5 million from the dog's Hollywood career. Later there were radio and TV shows starring dogs called Rin Tin Tin. compare Lassie
