  1. (1850-94) a Scottish writer of novels. He is best known for his famous children's adventure stories Treasure Island and Kidnapped, but he also wrote poetry for children and the well-known adult psychological novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886). Because of poor health Stevenson went to live on the island of Samoa in the Pacific for the last few years of his life.
