  1. a former British business producing many well-known types of chocolate bars and sweets, including Kit Kat, Smarties and Black Magic. Rowntree was founded in York in 1862 and joined with Mackintosh, another producer of sweets, in 1969. Since 1988 it has been owned by Nestlé and some products, such as Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles still use the Rowntree brand.
