  1. (1936-88) a US singer and writer of pop songs who was very successful in the early 1960s. He was sometimes called the 'Big O'. His voice had a sad and emotional quality and he always wore dark glasses while performing. His best-known songs include Only the Lonely (1960), Cryin'(1961) and Pretty Woman (1964). Orbison was chosen for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
