  1. (1924-90) a US jazz singer noted for her great range. She sang many songs by 'Duke' Ellington and George Gershwin, and she recorded with 'Dizzy' Gillespie, ‘Cannonball’ Adderley and many other jazz musicians. Her most successful songs included Mr Wonderful (1956) and Broken-Hearted Melody (1959).
