  1. (in Britain) houses or flats that are designed and built for elderly people or for people with disabilities so that they can live in the local community instead of in hospitals or care homes. Sheltered housing is usually arranged in small blocks, with a person in each block whose job is to help the people living there. The term is less often used in the US for this type of housing.
