  1. (1900-67) a US actor, known for playing calm, reliable characters. He won Oscars for his parts in Captains Courageous (1937) and Boys Town (1938). He had a long relationship with Katharine Hepburn, and they made nine films together, including Adam's Rib (1949), Pat and Mike (1952) and his last, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967). His other films include Father of the Bride (1950), Bad Day at Black Rock (1955), The Old Man and the Sea (1958) and Inherit the Wind (1960).
