  1. a small island in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It is famous as the place where Napoleon was kept as a prisoner by the British from 1815 until his death in 1821. It was owned by the British East India Company from 1659, and became a possession of the British Crown in 1834. The island's capital is Jamestown. The Governor of Saint Helena is also responsible for Tristan da Cunha and Ascension Island.
