  1. a small British orchestra, formed in 1958 by Neville Marriner (1924-2016). At first, it played only baroque music, and all its concerts took place in the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square, London. It then became one of London's most famous small orchestras, playing a wide variety of music.
