- a popular British television series, made in the 1960s, in which John Steed, an English gentleman, and his friend Emma Peel, an expert in judo, had slightly comic adventures fighting crime. Many people remember The Avengers for Emma Peel's leather suits and Steed's bowler hat and rolled umbrella. A less successful film was made in 1998 with Ralph Fiennes and Sean Connery.
