  1. a US mountain range in western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming. They are covered with forests which look dark from a distance, and this explains their name. The mountains contain many minerals, including gold. The highest part is Harney Peak (7 242 feet/2 209 metres). Mount Rushmore is also there.
