  1. one of the three main Scottish banks. It started in 1838 and has its head office in Glasgow, which is in Clydesdale, the broad valley of the river Clyde. In 2018 the company took over Virgin Money plc and plans were announced to change the name of the remaining Clydesdale Banks to Virgin Money.
