In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed in Gallipoli on the western shore of the Dardanelles to attack Turkey, which had entered the war on Germany's side. At the same time, British ships tried to fight their way through the Dardanelles in order to get supplies to southern Russia. Both attacks failed and more than 200 000 men were killed.
