the Farne Islands
/ðə ˈfɑːn aɪləndz/
/ðə ˌfɑːrn ˈaɪləndz/
- a group of small islands off the coast of north-east England. Nobody lives there, and the many birds and seals (= large sea animals) that go there are protected by law. The islands are perhaps best known because Grace Darling lived in a lighthouse (= a tower containing a strong light to warn or guide ships) on one of them.
