the Federal Communications Commission
- an independent US government organization, created in 1934, which makes decisions about communications. This includes the use of television, radio, wire, cable, broadband and satellites. It is the United States' main authority for communications law, regulation and development. The FCC gives stations their licences and the wave ranges on which they can broadcast. It also puts pressure on stations to avoid offensive programmes.
