  1. a comic opera (1889) by Gilbert and Sullivan. It is set in Venice, Italy, where a gondolier (= a person who takes people on a boat through the canals of Venice) is believed to be the prince of an imaginary country. A local aristocrat wants his daughter to marry the prince, but she loves a servant called Luiz. In the end, it is discovered that Luiz is the real prince.
