  1. a large museum in Lambeth, London, founded in 1917. It shows the history of the wars Britain has fought in since 1914 and also shows life during wartime. It aims to increase the understanding of the history of modern war in general. The museum also has a reference library of books, maps, photographs and films, and a large collection of work by war artists. Part of the collection is now shown at the Imperial War Museum North which opened in 2002 in Manchester, and aircraft and military vehicles are displayed at a museum at Duxford, a former air force base in Cambridgeshire.
