  1. a private US centre for research in Princeton, New Jersey. It was established in 1930 and has four departments: Historical Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Social Science. Each department has teachers and 'visiting members' from other research institutions or universities. Albert Einstein was one of the first members. The Institute has a close but independent relationship with Princeton University.
