the Mersey

/ðə ˈmɜːrzi/
- a river in north-west England which flows through Greater Manchester and Merseyside and into the Irish Sea. It is usually associated with Liverpool because it flows through that city and has played an important part in its history. There are three tunnels under it, one for the underground railway and two for roads, and a ferry across it.
