  1. a British passenger ship built by Cunard, the largest of its type ever built. It was named after Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother, and was launched by her in 1938. It was first used in the Second World War to carry soldiers, and after the war carried passengers between England and the US. In 1972 it was destroyed by a fire. see also the QE2
