- any of a number of hotels around the world established by or named after the Swiss businessman César Ritz (1850-1918). They are famous for being very comfortable and expensive. The first Ritz™ Hotel was opened in London in 1906. The word ritzy, meaning expensive and elegant, was formed from the name of the Ritz™ Hotels.
