  1. a Broadway musical play (1959) by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. It tells the story of the Austrian Trapp family who sing together and escape to Switzerland from the Nazis. The film version, in which Julie Andrews plays Maria Trapp, won six Oscars. The songs include The Sound of Music, Maria, Do Re Mi and Climb Every Mountain.
