  1. a comedy play (c. 1593) by William Shakespeare. It is about two friends, Valentine and Proteus, who both fall in love with the same young woman, Silvia. Another young woman, Julia, is in love with Proteus, and a complicated love story follows. It is one of Shakespeare's less well-known plays.
