  1. a political party in Northern Ireland, formed in 1905 and led from 1995 to 2005 by David Trimble. It is one of the main political parties that wants Northern Ireland to remain a part of the United Kingdom. In 2003 it had six Members of Parliament in the House of Commons but three of them left in protest at their leader's support of the Good Friday Agreement. It has lost support to the Democratic Unionist Party. The party had two members elected to the House of Commons in the 2015 General Election, but lost them again in 2017.
