  1. the name used by the press, etc. to refer to the illegal sale of property in Arkansas by the Whitewater Development Corporation, a company that had connections with US President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary. Investigations into the affair, which were begun in 1994 by Congress and the Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr led to a trial of Clinton by the US Senate in 1999 in which he was acquitted. The investigation was finally closed in 2001 when Clinton left office.
