  1. a New England state in the US, on the border with Canada. It is also known as the Green Mountain State. The largest city is Burlington and the capital city is Montpelier. The French settled there first in the 17th century, and Vermont became a state in 1791. It produces different types of stone, including granite and marble, and other products include electrical equipment, paper, furniture and maple syrup (= a sweet, sticky sauce produced from a type of maple tree). Tourist attractions in Vermont include the Green Mountain National Forest and the Bennington Battle Monument.
