  1. (1900-78) an English popular music band leader in the 1930s and 1940s. He later became famous on radio for playing dance tunes requested by people in countries all round the world. The Victor Silvester Television Dancing Club ran for 17 years and his orchestra appeared in more than 6 500 broadcasts for BBC radio.
