- a large group of British shops selling newspapers, magazines, books, cards, toys and games, etc. Many British towns have a branch of Smith's. There are also hundreds of branches of Smith's at train stations, airports, etc. in the UK and Ireland, and branches in Australia, Asia and the Middle East. The first shop using the Smith family name opened in 1792 and the company WH Smith was founded in 1828.
