  1. a very large rock music festival held in August 1969 near Bethel, New York, 60 miles/97 kilometres south-west of Woodstock, the place originally planned for it. Many famous singers and groups performed, including Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane. The festival was attended by hundreds of thousands of young people, many of whom took drugs, but there was no violence. It became a symbol of the new youth culture of the hippies.
