Zachary Taylor

- (1784-1850) the 12th US President (1849-50). He was an army officer known as 'Old Rough and Ready', who fought in the War of 1812 and in the Mexican War, in which he defeated General Santa Anna. Taylor owned slaves but as President supported California as a new state that did not practise slavery.
