  1. (1898-1937) a US pilot who in 1932 became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic alone. She and Fred Noonan, another pilot, disappeared in their plane somewhere in the Pacific while trying to fly around the world. What happened to them is still a mystery. In 1997 Linda Finch successfully flew around the world using Earhart's route and the same model of plane that she flew in.
