  1. a very popular US television programme in which young people who want to be singers have the chance to be chosen to perform on the programme in front of judges who select the best. The worst singers in this first stage are also often shown on the programme. In later programmes, members of the public can vote by phone or online for the singer they think is best and the one with the most votes becomes the winner.
