  1. (1940-92) an English writer of fiction. She was especially known for describing magical or impossible situations in a realistic way. Her best-known novels are Nights at the Circus (1984) and Wise Children (1991). She also wrote the film The Company of Wolves (1984), which was based on one of her stories.
