  1. (1794-1876) the Mexican army officer who in 1836 led the attack on the Alamo. Texas became independent of Mexico when his forces were defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto in the same year. General Santa Anna later became Mexico's president and lost the Mexican War in 1848.
