  1. (1859-1930) a Scottish writer. He is best known as the author of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, but he also wrote historical novels and science fiction. He began his working life as a doctor but gave this up after the success of his first Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet (1887). He was made a knight in 1902. see also detective story
