  1. (died 1718) the name by which the English pirate (= a sailor who attacks other ships and steals from them) Edward Teach was known. He was active in the Caribbean and along the eastern coast of North America during 1717 and 1718, until he was killed during a battle at sea with two ships of the English navy.
