  1. a British commercial television station that started broadcasting in 1982 and can be seen all over Britain. It is paid for by selling its advertising time. As well as dramas and films, it broadcasts many cultural and educational programmes, documentaries (= films presenting facts about real life) and programmes aimed at an audience from a variety of cultures. see also S4C
