  1. the Crystal Palace
    a very large building made of glass and metal, designed in nine days by Joseph Paxton (1801-65) for the Great Exhibition of 1851. It took six months to put up in Hyde Park in London. After the Exhibition, it was taken to a new park in south London. In 1936 it burned down. Its name was given to it by the humorous magazine Punch.
