  1. (1802-73) an English painter and sculptor best known for his paintings of animals. Monarch of the Glen (1850), one of his most famous paintings, shows a stag (= male deer) in a Scottish Highland scene. Landseer created the lions at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, and was Queen Victoria's favourite painter. He was made a knight in 1850
