- (1935-98) an African-American leader and writer in the 1960s. After being in prison for several crimes, he joined the Black Panthers and collected his writings in Soul on Ice (1968). After more trouble with the police, he went to Cuba and Algeria, but then returned to the US as a 'born-again' Christian.
