  1. a detective in many US novels and short stories written between 1929 and 1971 by Frederic Dannay (1905-82) and Manfred B Lee (1905-71) under the same name of Ellery Queen. The first book was The Roman Hat Mystery (1929). There were also radio, television and film series, and Dannay and Lee also started Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine in 1941. see also detective story
