  1. (1920-98) an English broadcaster and writer of comedy who with Denis Norden wrote several successful comedy series for radio and television, including Take It From Here (1947-58). He appeared on a number of popular panel games and quiz shows and was well known for his intelligent humour. He also wrote a novel and children's books.
