  1. a popular British television programme (1992-1999) in which members of the public took part in a series of difficult physical contests against the Gladiators, a group of very strong men and women with colourful names like Scorpio, Wolf and Cobra. Some of the Gladiators became stars and appeared in other television programmes. A similar programme on US television, called American Gladiators, ran from 1989 to 1997. A new series started in Britain in 2008.
