  1. an industrial city in south-west Scotland. It is Scotland's largest city and a major port. It used to be an important centre for shipbuilding, and when this and several other industries closed down in the late 20th century it became well known for problems connected with unemployment, drugs and crime. Glasgow has many interesting and attractive buildings, as well as important schools, universities and museums, and in the 1990s it developed into a major centre for culture, the arts and education. In 1990 it was named European City of Culture and in 2003 was European Capital of Sport. Since 1996 it has been governed as a council area (called Glasgow City).
