Graham Sutherland

/ˌɡreɪəm ˈsʌðərlənd/, /ˌɡræm ˈsʌðərlənd/
- (1903-80) an English artist. He is well known for his portraits , landscapes and religious art. He painted many pictures of the Second World War and the Welsh countryside, but his best-known works are a tapestry (= a picture made by sewing coloured threads on a cloth) of Christ in Coventry Cathedral, and a portrait of Winston Churchill which was later destroyed by Churchill's wife because he did not like it.
