  1. (1914-70) a US striptease artist (= entertainer who takes off her clothes for an audience), known for her elegant stage performances. She was a star of the Ziegfeld Follies in the 1930s, appeared in several films and became popular on television in the 1960s. Lee's book about her life, Gypsy (1957), became a Broadway musical show (1959) and later a film (1962).
