  1. (1891-1980) a US author whose work had an important influence on the writers of the beat generation. His early books, Tropic of Cancer (1934) and Tropic of Capricorn (1939), published in Paris, were banned in Britain and the US for many years because of their detailed descriptions of sex. His other books included the series of three, together called The Rosy Crucifixion (1949-60).
